 Doesn't last January 1, 2009
My son received this for Christmas and sadly it didn't last 2 days. The quality is poor, the part that was supposed to be spring loaded kept hanging up and eventually stuck completely. When this happened the product would not turn off and kept making sound. A complete waste of money.

My five year old son loves this toy. I had to buy another one because when he has playdates both boys want to save the empire together. It's basic but lights up and is durable but not so hard that it hurts if they accidentally (or purposely) hit each other. Lots of fun with lots of imagination.

This light saber is a toy, not an adult model, and I can't believe any child wouldn't love it. My son loves all the sound effects it features. It has distinctly different noises and recognizes the movements your child is making. One noise for opening or closing the lightsaber, 1 noise for being slashed through the air, and a 3rd noise when your child strikes something. Yes, this toy IS made to be battled with and it makes a cool "clashing lightsaber" sound when you strike something (hopefully another lightsaber and not Grandma's knees) with enough force. My son is 7 and a Star Wars FREAK!!! (gets that from his dad) and he loves this toy. I'm sorry that the other reviewer has 1 that seems to break, but ours has proven to be durable, exciting and a new favorite toy. PS My son owns about 10 lightsabers of varying quality and functionality. This one is by far the best and well worth the $20 we paid for it at a major discount retailer.

My 5 year old son loved this lightsaber. It is spring loaded, lights up, and makes sounds. So far we have owned four. They have lasted from zero days (broken when we took it out of the box) to two weeks. Maybe my son is a bit rough with it, but how can a 5 year old boy resist play fighting with a lightsaber?
So, if you buy this lightsaber expect it to break. Have fun with it while it lasts and tell your kid that it will break so that they are prepared for it when it happens.
My only real suggestion is to make sure to buy the lightsaber from a store with a good return policy.

You'll see several reviews across several websites telling you that these spring loaded light sabers are the ones to get. How they are so 'realistic' and awesome. Well not so much. Here are my gripes.
Spring Loaded- yep, it is. And it shoots the blade out so fast that it is fully extended before the "extending sound" is even halfway done. Plus it make a loud "CLICK!" when it hits the end of the extension so it kind of offsets the "mood".
Makes Humming Noise- yep it does. And you instantly recognize the three sounding loop right away "Hum Her Her, Hum Her Her, Hum Her Her" over and over and over. Doesn't matter how you swing it. It's the same three sounds on a loop "Hum Her Her".
Well that's about all there is to this item! If you don't like the "wrist flick" of the $8 light sabers, and you need one that makes the same annoying loop noise over and over, this is the lightsaber for you!
